Having been raised in an international community in Kobe, Japan, Akira is English-Japanese bilingual.  He graduated magna cum laude double majoring in psychology and philosophy at Boston College.  He studied with Professor Eugene Gendlin at the University of Chicago Graduate Division and then returned to Japan.  He worked at the Kitakyushu Municipal Hospital and then at the University of Occupational & Environmental Health School of Medicine where he got his doctorate.  Since then, he has taught at Okayama University, Kobe College and now at Kansai University.  He has taught part-time at universities including Shizuoka University Graduate School, Hyogo University of Teacher Education Graduate Division, Kyushu University, the University of Strathclyde (UK).  He has also been a doctoral thesis examiner at the University of East Anglia (UK) and the University of Sydney (Australia).  Akira has served as one of the founders and past-presidents of the Japan Focusing Association, and has served as board members of the Japanese Association of Humanistic Psychology, The International Focusing Institute (USA), World Association of Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy and Counseling (UK).  Currently he is a chair of the steering committee of the Eugene Gendlin Center and an editorial member of the journal, Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapies.  He teaches Focusing all across Japan and worldwide, including China, Australia, Belgium, United States of America, the Netherlands and Hungary.

Dates: April 25–29, 2026 (Saturday to Wednesday) with Prof. Akira, and practice dates (listed below).

 

Training location : Hong Kong

Total Duration: 40 hours of teaching and practices

Prerequisites:

There are no prerequisites for this course. It is designed for beginners. Also, for helping professionals, including mental health practitioners, therapists, counselors, social workers, and clinical psychologists.

Fee: HK$7,800

Early Bird Rates:

  • Before January 15, 2026: HK$6,800

  • Before March 15, 2026: HK$7,500

  • Group of Two or Above : HK$6,800/ per person

Course schedule:

1) To meet Professor Akira Ikemi In-person workshop dates: April 25-29, 2026 (Saturday to Wednesday) 

2) To practice with Ms. Rachel Wong / Dr. Camille Li from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (2.5 hours) on following date:

  • May 2 (Saturday) 1900-2130

  • May 3 (Sunday) 1500-1730

  • May 23 (Saturday) 1900-2130

  • May 24 (Sunday) 1000-1230

Course content includes:

  • Ability to identify and utilize the felt sense in your process

  • Ability to listen in the Focusing way

  • Having Focusing experience with a number of other Focusing partners

Becoming a Certified Focusing Professional

Step 1: Complete the Focusing Beginner Class

  • Start your journey by enrolling in the Focusing Beginner Class (This class).

  • To earn the PFP Award (Proficiency in Focusing Partnership Award), you must complete the course and successfully pass (optional) individual sessions for evaluation ($800 for a one-time assessment if passed).

The PFP Award can be a first goal for trainees who have selected the path to become a certified Focusing professional or it can be a stand-alone award demonstrating a particular level of Focusing experience.

Step 2: Certification (2026-2028)

  • Train to become a Certified Focusing Professional in Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy (FOT).

  • Certification is provided by The International Focusing Institute (TIFI) in New York.
